Benjamin was a farmworker and shoemaker. They lived in Hardwick, Vermont (1860), East Montpelier, Vermont (1870), Rutland, Massachusetts (1880), and Worcester, Massachusetts.
Benjamin served in the Civil War as a Private in Co. C, 8th Vermont Infantry Regiment. He enlisted on 3 September 1864, and was mustered out on 1 June 1865. While he was in that unit, the 8th Vermont took in battles at Opequan (19 September 1864), Fisher's Hill (27 September 1864), Cedar Creeek (19 October 1864), and Newtown (12 November 1864), all in Virginia. The last battle in which they took part was on 20 February 1865.
