Aurelius served three enlistments during the Civil War. On 15 June 1861, he enlisted as a Private in Co. K, 4th Maine Infantry. He was mustered out of that unit on 25 October 1862. Two weeks earlier, on 11 October 1862, he enlisred as a Private in Co. I, 26th Maine Infantry, and served in that unit until 17 Augsut 1863. Then, on 28 December 1863, he enlisted as a Corporal in Co. L, 1st Maine Heavy Artillery Regiment. He was promoted to Full Sergeant 19 May 1864. He was mustered out on 1 September 1866 (AMERICAN CIVIL WAR SOLDIERS. Ancestry.com).
 Apparently, he and Laura were married shortly after he left the Army. They moved out to Tehama County, in the Sacramento Valley of California, where he ran a farm. After he died, she stayed in California.

 In the 1900 Census of Belfast, his birthdate is reported as May 1842. However, at the time of the 1850 Census, he was only 2 years old.

Fred was a blacksmith. He and Emma lived with their family in Unity, Maine, until their separation in late 1900. He is next located in Rochester, New Hampshire, in 1910, living with his second wife, Minnie E. (Brown) aged 29. Fred had his own blacksmith shop in Rochester. By 1920, they had moved to Leominster, Massachusetts, where he worked as a machinist in a blacksmith shop. In 1930, they lived in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, and he worked in a blacksmith shop there.
