Guestbook
Unfortunately -- VERY unfortunately in my view -- unscrupulous and destructive elements out there in the internet world have forced us to shut down our guestbook. Marketers of illicit websites and other unsavory things have invaded our guestbook and filled it up with garbage faster than this webmaster can keep it cleaned up. We refuse to play a part in those activities, and have taken the quite serious step of closing down our guestbook rather than trying to keep it open and continually having to sweep the trash away. It is a sad thing that people trying to accomplish good things on the internet are locked out by the low-lifes who ruin it for the rest of us. I resisted doing this for a long time because I did not want to have the sense that we could be "run off" the internet. Unfortunately, that is precisely just what has happened. I am not sure if we have any alternatives, but I am all ears. You can e-mail the webmaster with suggestions for alternatives here. The Scribner Family Association is a nonprofit organization, and we encourage all of you to let us know if you have resources you would like to contribute to this effort. Don't forget to check out the Scribner Family Multimedia History. |

Name etymology and Scribner genealogy
Using the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language (3rd edition), it is possible to trace the Proto-Indo-European (PIE) roots of the name to SKHRIB-ANER, or "man who cuts symbols into stone". This meaning is thus thousands of years old. Further analysis suggests component meanings" S - ancient meaning of "symbol" or mark (like lightning bolt) KHER - v., to cut I - prepositional particle? ("into") B - consonant for "stone" (later butrus, petros) ANER - "man", (later andros, anthros)

I thought I would let you know that there are some Scrivens families in the UK, though it is quite a rare name. I'm afraid I do not know of any US connections as, for the past 150 years or so my descendants have lived in the London area and in Essex (UK not US). My dad (who is also called John Scrivens) is about to start investigating the family history so I will let you know if he uncovers any US connections.

I am trying to trace my deceased husband's paternal family, the Orr Scribners from Ireland, who went to Australia, perhaps in the early twentieth century. I am interested in the mix of Irish and English origins - my husband always thought it was Irish. He was raised in Sydney in the 1940s.
Thankyou for making it such a user friendly website!

Great site! I'm not a Scribner but I knew Tom & Mary Scribner 30 years ago in Santa Cruz, CA & was there when Charles Kuralt shot his "On the Road" segment about Tom & his saw playing. Enjoyed seeing his old family pictures!

My grandmother was born Scribner.
It's rather fun to find my great-grandparents and grandmother here. I could fill in a few dates, middle names, spouses, etc. if you are interested. I also gained some missing dates tracing his line back. My great grandfather was interested in genealogy, so I have several interesting lineages of his [including back to the mayflower] but nothing that follows the Scribner name back any farther than Noah [married to Hester Seabury]

Descendant of the Scribner Line from Norwalk, CT. U.S.A.
Your website was suggested to me by Nancy Waters of Calgary, Alberta. I live in Saskatoon, SK. and have been working on genealogy for many years. I have researched the Olive (Scribner) and James Reid line. Olive was the daughter of Thaddeus Scribner and Prudence Morrell. Thaddeus was one of the United Empire Loyalists that came to Canada from Norwalk. It is very interestingly done and I commend you for the time you have put on making it so interesting and informative.

I am a descendant of Edward Scribner and Abigail Leavitt through their son Samuel b. 19 May 1735 and his wife Sarah Bucknell b. 29 July 1745. They were married 10 April 1764. Their daughter, Abigail Scribner married Nathaniel Burnham in 1799. I have not been able to find a birth record for Sarah Bucknell. I believe she was born in New Hampshire. Anyone have this info?
I have vols. 1 thru 9 and love looking at them over and over! Beautiful work!

Ancestory of Jay B., Charles E., Wallace, Nathan, Joseph, etc.
My daughther, Samantha, made me aware of this website, and I must say I am very impressed with the quality of it. I have some interesting information on the Scribners who engaged in logging in Fresno Flats, California and have begun to collect information on my particular lineage. However, my time is limited. Finally, I have always wanted to track the Scribner Roots in England, and this website has saved me a great deal of time on this endeavor. Was it Scriven or Scrivener? I have found evidenced, albeit unsubstantiated, of the latter (Scrivener). Scrivner with a little twist in the "v" could have resulted in Scri"b"ner. Just a thought.
